Dollar Tree Autumn Welcome Wreath

So this project happened when my husband and I got our first house in the spring of 2021. I wanted something to take my mind off of the endless wedding planning (posts about that to come later), and something that I could hang on our front door because the front of the house looked very plain.

Everything on this wreath was actually sourced from Dollar Tree (minus some of the hot glue, but you can get that at Dollar Tree as well).

The base of the wreath is a wire wreath frame, I think it’s about 12 in (30.48 cm) in diameter. The green and orange sections are made up of what is called deco mesh. Deco mesh is a hard beast to explain. It’s plastic mesh that is woven kind of like burlap is. I like the ones that have some shiny/reflective strands woven in because they catch the light nicely. For this wreath, I used 4 6-inch (15.24cm) wide rolls of deco mesh of each color. I believe each roll was roughly 15 feet (4.5 m) long. Additionally, Dollar Tree had some different colored foam “cranberries,” some autumn-colored bows, and some metal word cut-outs that I picked up.

Once I had all of the materials figured out, it was mostly just a lot of trial and error weaving the deco mesh until I got something I thought looked nice. The wreath frames are built with a few different rows of wires. I took my deco mesh and wove it back and forth through the rows. I made sure to keep it a little looser to give my wreath a ruffled look. When I reached the end of a roll, I simply tucked the end of the mesh back inside the rest of the weaving. This has worked for me, and my wreath is still holding strong 2 years later, but you could probably hot glue the ends down if you were concerned about it.

I would like to caution you about deco mesh. It likes to get stuck in carpet. It’s been 2 years, and there are still days I walk past where I worked on it on the floor and I still catch little bits of orange or green plastic threads… It’s almost as bad as glitter!

After the main portion of the wreath was done, it was just a matter of placement of the accents and gluing them down. I opted to have my cranberries come in bunches of up to 3 berries.

For the hanger, I used a nice white ribbon that I wrapped around one of the wire frames on the back. That’s really it. It looks cute, I love it, and it was super easy! 🙂

I’d love to hear your thoughts or ideas! Or any horror stories you have with deco mesh!
