Crochet Roses

These little roses are probably one of my favorite crochet flower patterns. First of all, because they are super simple and easy to whip up. Second of all, because they look really nice when they are finished.

The pattern itself is all of two or three rows (depending on if you count the foundation chain as a row).

First, you make sure that your chain is a multiple of two (the last three count as your first double crochet [US] for the next row) and make sure to leave a fairly long tail. I tend to make 24 petals for a larger rose (worsted weight – 50 chain stitches) or 15 petals for a smaller rose (finer yarns – 32 stitches).

The first row after the foundation is simply three double crochet in one stitch, chain 1, skip a stitch, and then repeat the three double. The second row gets a little bit more tricky. You chain three, make a double crochet in the first stitch, two double crochet in the next stitch, one double crochet in the next stitch, and then chain three and slip stitch into the chain 1 space. Repeat that all the way around.

Your piece will naturally want to coil around itself. That’s a good thing. When you finish off, weave in the end that you just ended with. Go back to the beginning tail and start to coil your petals, stitching the foundation chain together as you go with the tail end of the yarn (this can be done with a yarn needle, but I just use my crochet hook because I tend to not carry yarn needles with me).

I like to decorate with these flowers. They are really good on hair clips and bags. My most recent use of them was on a small Easter basket. I really like how they turned out.

Thanks for reading.
