Crochet Bowl Cozy

I’m sure we’ve all seen those lovely bowl cozies that you can put in the microwave so that the bowl won’t burn your fingers when you take it out. (And if you haven’t, you really need to try them; I use them for anything that I eat from a bowl that is hot.) Well, my mom sewed me one, and someone at church made my boyfriend one. So, I decided maybe it was time I made one.

However, I don’t pull my sewing machine out much right now (mainly because I live in a small apartment with my boyfriend and my crafting table is often full of bags of yarn, projects, and other miscellaneous items I need to put away), so I found a crochet pattern for one.

I really like how it turned out, to be honest. Because I used a variegated yarn, the cozy has a sort of spiral effect throughout it.

The pattern called for a double layer on the bottom of the bowl, which I like, since it helps to act as a hot pad and protect your table. It was a little challenging trying to understand how exactly the pattern attached the second layer to the first, so I’d probably change that in the future.

The other issue I had when making this was that the pattern switched from working in separate rows (finishing of the round, chain and then start to work the next row) to working in continuous rounds (you don’t finish off the row and just keep working). This is a challenge for me because I almost never use stitch markers, so it gets tricky for me to keep count of what stitch I’m on, especially when it came to making the corners of the bowl cozy.

But most of that is just because I don’t use stitch markers if I don’t have to. In the future, I will probably look into the possibility of either finishing off the rows, or I will bite the bullet and go dig out my stitch markers to help me keep track of where I am.

Any questions, comments, concerns? Let me know!

Thanks for reading!

Just a suggestion when working in rounds I often use a long piece of yarn, thin cotton yarn is especially good, to keep track of the rounds. The yarn goes under the first stitch from back to front and then on the next round you just fold it back to mark the first stitch again, and so on. It can even show you how many rounds you have done. Saves the faff of removing and reinserting stitch markers.

I’ve heard of people using yarn before, but usually only in the same capacity as a stitch marker where you move it entirely with every round. I’ll have to give your method a try!
