Half Apron

So, After I worked at the fabric store where I wore aprons every day, I worked as a janitor. Now, anyone who has worked as a janitor can tell you, its hard work. There’s nothing simple about hauling 10+ fifty pound bags to a dumpster at 10 o’clock at night.

For me, none of that was ever a big issue. My problem was… not having enough pockets. My route encompassed several stairwells, and a lot of up and down ladders (not all positions have that kind of thing, I just got lucky). As most of you are probably aware, taking any kind of cart up and down a ladder or stairwell is not very easy. So, I would generally carry a lot of my supplies with me in my pockets.

About a month or so into my employment as a janitor, I decided I needed more pockets. Due to the nature of my job, I really didn’t want to take one of my nice cotton aprons into work and ruin it. Plus, I tended to have to work in extremely hot environments, so a bib apron was out.

I went to my local fabric store, picked out a nice 45 inch canvas, and got a half yard. I trimmed it down to the size that fit my waist, hemmed it, added ties, and then used the trimmings I had left to add pockets. I could have probably used some slightly deeper pockets. And I debated getting a contrast fabric to make one large pocket. But, as I said, I had to go up and down ladders, and having anything near the center of the apron would make me get caught on the rungs.

And thus, we have the half apron shown above. It served me very well until I left that position, and I still wear it around the house sometimes today.

Any questions, comments, concerns? Let me know!
