The crocodile stitch can be used for quite a variety of projects. Here, I was attempting to create a dice bag for my Magic the Gathering dice.

(Side note, say hello to the turtles! Leo, Mikey, Raph, and Donna.)
The first attempt at making the dice bag ended up a LOT bigger than I thought it would. There were too many possibilities for the dice to fall out between the stitches of the bag. So, my boyfriend found out that the bag fit very nicely around a wine bottle. After that, we made another one in the gray for his friend’s wedding gift since they were fans of Dungeons and Dragons.

Once theirs was done, I attempted to make the dice bag again. This time, I used a smaller hook, thinner yarn, and I worked with two working strands. One, I used for the foundation row of the crocodile stitch, and the other I used to make the actual scales. The effect was exactly what I was looking for.
The goal of the separate colors was to give the impression of an inner flame burning within a dragon’s egg. I think I got that for the most part. I also really liked the variegated yarn I used, because it alternated from light orange to rust red and back, which allowed for the appearance of something similar to the flickering of fire embers.
Or at least that’s what I see. Maybe you see something different.
