When I moved out on my own, I had literally two store bought potholders for in my kitchen. Anyone who has worked in a kitchen knows that that can get to be a little difficult, especially if you have a hot pan sitting on them on the table, and you need to take another pan or dish out of the oven.

My solution? Crochet some. I actually used a pattern that was meant to be for a small pouch or makeup bag. But found that you could lay it flat, whip stitch the seam, and you would have a nice double-thick crochet pot holder.
Now, for these hot pads, you want to use a cotton yarn because that is what holds up the best when it comes to heat. They are also machine washable and, in my opinion, give a better grip on pans than my store bought ones.
Since making these for myself, I have made some for various family members and friends. However, no two potholders are the same. Why? I really don’t know. For this pattern, I can use the same number of foundation chains, but after that, it is just single crochets around and around with no joining. And I don’t generally mark rows, so some end up rectangular and some end up square.
But, to be honest, its a potholder. It is either in a drawer mixed with a bunch of other ones that don’t all come out at once, or it is sitting underneath a pot or pan that covers most of it.

Either way, perfect or not, I think they are cute and work really well.
