One day, I came into work, and one of my coworkers came up to me. I was not super close with this coworker, but we knew each other well enough. Well, he came up to me and told me that his wife was pregnant. I told him congratulations, like you do. His next comment almost kept me from making this particular project. He basically said that he was telling me before they even told anyone else because he wanted me to make a baby blanket since I had made one for a different coworker.
Now, I am generally more than happy to make you a baby blanket for any newborn baby. But when you make it seem like you are entitled to one, that is when I have a little bit of an issue.
But, I will come down off my soap box now and get back to the project. I did have a lot of fun making it. He and his wife didn’t know what they were having yet, so he basically told me that I should make it in gender neutral colors. My first thought went to green and purple, because I know women that like green and men that like purple. I also knew that he was a pretty big DC Comics fan, so I pitched the idea of a Joker-themed blanket. He loved the idea, but said that his wife would not approve.
So, I added another shade of each color to the mix. It now simply looks like a very floral/plant-themed blanket, which is enhanced by the leafy trim (which I made up and was very proud of). But, in reality, it is a DC Comics Joker blanket.
They ended up having a little girl, so the floral vibe worked out pretty well. I wrapped it for him, and he gave it to his wife for Christmas. She came into the store to personally thank me one evening when I was working.
